<p>Seemingly random shapes and forms found in nature often appear haphazard. But upon closure inspection, there is a structure underlying these natural arrangements. And as we look closer and closer, the patterns repeat over and over. These are fractals.</p>
<p>In basing design on the stress-reductive quality found in fractals, the transdisciplinary design team of 13&9 Design, Fractals Research, and Mohawk Group are tapping into our deep-seated desire to see patterns, to connect to nature and to have more inspiring and relaxing environments in which we live and work. </p>

<p>Fractals are the building blocks of many of nature’s patterns and have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and so provide benefits to physical health. This visual language is the basis for Relaxing Floors, a modular system designed by 13&9 in collaboration with Fractals Research and Mohawk Group. Relaxing Floors is the culmination of art, science and human-centered design based on fractal patterns. Utilising fractals gives our eyes a break from the digital world and delivers the essence of nature to the contract build environment.</p>

Australia for its ceremonial use in  painting, on bark, wood and rock faces, and body painting.<br />

<p>For generations, Indigenous people have shared culture through stories and artwork. At Dreamtime Flooring, Indigenous heritage is drawn from to celebrate this rich culture through the flooring medium in the hopes of preserving those stories for our future generations. </p>

<p>Dreamtime's mission is to have as many buildings as possible for current and future generations to see Aboriginal ancestry and culture with a particular focus on public buildings: Government, council, schools, libraries and galleries. Using positive and negative space, creating tonal shifts, and pushing boundaries of abstracted subject matter, Optic Reset allows you to create your own visual narratives with dual styles in shifting colourways of light and dark. The visuals give us cues for our other senses, and they are how we understand the world. And with Optic Reset, interior space can be created with subtle or dramatic views on the floor.</p>

<p>This concept is illustrative of The Visual Age, where there is visual literacy and creative democracy for all, and we have become fluent in the elements of graphics, photography, design, and art. Social media especially has influenced this, allowing for self-expression and creativity to come together to unite us with a sense of purpose on our collective path.</p>

<p>Meet Lichen Community, designed in collaboration with McLennan Design, a modular carpet collection that connects us to a more restorative future. Inspired by expansive communities of lichens that grow together on bark and rock formations, playing a role in our ecosystems, the Lichen Community collection has been designed to provide a refined solution for creating collaborative environments, bringing people together. Rooted in the concept of symbiosis, Lichen Community defines communal spaces through colour and texture. This fresh take on the original Lichen collection offers an additional bark texture to join the popular stone base, serving as ground textures for the multi-hued lichens that grow together in place.</p>


<h2>Biophilic design, locally made</h2>
<p>Biophilic design aims to enhance humankind’s innate biological connection with nature, bringing natural elements into interior spaces and mimicking natural patterns. This new collection concentrates on mimicking the growth patterns of real lichens on stone and tree bark, incorporating colours that takes us on a visual journey through the forest, from the floor into the trees with the new warm, bark-grey background and soft, more muted highlights. Drawing from the natural world allows us to create spaces a little more connected to our roots, which can have a profound impact the health and wellbeing of building occupants.</p>

GH Commercial collaborated with local design firm A Plus Design to elevate the village's spaces through carefully chosen flooring solutions. In the fireside lounge—an inviting haven for relaxation and conversation—GH Commercial worked closely with Mohawk Group in the USA to develop a custom textured patterned loop carpet tile. This design evokes a warm, homey ambiance with a heathered, multi-colored appearance while ensuring exceptional durability and resistance to fading, accommodating the high foot traffic and expansive windows characteristic of the area. The integration of Duracolor® premium nylon ensures the carpet remains stain-resistant, while its modular format allows for easy maintenance, all while radiating a cozy residential charm.

Arrowtown Lifestyle Village, New Zealand

Situated on land from Lincoln University, Tuhiraki is AgResearch's new $103 million research facility, designed to be a vibrant center for advancing agricultural science. This state-of-the-art building brings together nearly 300 scientists and support staff, fostering collaboration with Lincoln University and nearby research institutes.

Orewa Sands Retirement Village is located at the western end of Auckland's Orewa Beach at 25 Annalise Place. Set amidst native bush with beach views, the village offers residents a calm and scenic environment to enjoy their retirement. Stage 2 of the project is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, supporting the village’s expansion to meet future needs.

Queenstown Country Club offers over 230 private villas and apartments, along with a rest home and dementia care services. Unlike traditional models, this community emphasizes public engagement through shared spaces, including a civic area, childcare facilities, retail center, clubhouse, and medical center, creating opportunities for all generations to connect.

Led by Bella McMahon of Warren & Mahoney, the design of the project has focused on creating modern retail spaces that resonate with BNZ’s brand identity while providing inviting and engaging environments for customers.

The FMG Ashburton office refurbishment spans 210m², aiming to create a more functional and welcoming workspace. This project reflects FMG's commitment to supporting New Zealand's farmers and rural communities through the choice of Godfrey Hirst wool tiles. Inspired by the country’s landscapes, these tiles effortlessly bring the essence of New Zealand's natural beauty into the office. This selection showcases FMG's dedication to using renewable materials while championing the local wool industry.

St Lukes Health is a Tasmanian based health insurance company that has their sights on making Tasmania the healthiest island on the planet through their not-for-profit and locally owned business structure. St Lukes Health offers customers ‘wellness hubs’ in Hobart and Launceston, which is a place where every Tasmanian can find ways to get healthier.

Architectus worked with our in-house design team to create a custom carpet design that met the design requirements bringing a relaxed but lively feel to welcome guests, each unique space and cohesively entwined with the contemporary style. The use of cross hatching, overlapping colour blocking and linear shapes all came together with a combination of rich colours to create a contemporary pattern. A different custom design was implemented within each space across the hotel corridors, suite rooms and common areas all coming together to share the same rich colour palette. Architectus further chose a woven carpet made from premium wool blend fibres creating a high-end finish that is soft underfoot. This flooring selection further contributes to the relaxed feel of the hotel and providing a luxurious feel to each space.

Novotel Preston

GH Commercial's custom woven carpet enhances the cultural ambiance. The carpet incorporates Māori whakairo (carving) and peitatanga (painting) art forms, reflecting traditional Kowhaiwhai motifs. The design, concepted by artist Fayne Robinson, is a combination of motifs from Ngati Wae Wae and Makaawhio who collaborated on the project, adding depth to the cultural experience. Made from an 80/20 wool blend, the carpets combine comfort and durability, ideal for high foot traffic areas in public spaces like The Māwhera Pā.

GH Commercial provided innovative flooring solutions for KiwiRail's new offices, offering Mohawk Flex-Lok tabs that streamline access to the sub-floor, essential for maintenance and upgrades due to extensive cabling. Designed by JCY Architects, the floor pattern showcases three colors of Godfrey Hirst Spectrum Designer Jet Tiles – 7200 Ashen, 7600 Cinder, and 3200 Zest.

Kiwi Rail Central Park - Auckland New Zealand

Perched on a ridgeline with stunning vistas of the city skyline, Rangitoto, and the Hauraki Gulf, Horizon Mission Bay embodies a design philosophy deeply rooted in its natural surroundings. The deliberate use of materials seamlessly connects the building with the sea and land, ensuring residents feel fully immersed in their environment.

Ascot Park Hotel - Invercargill New Zealand

Henley Brook Primary School officially opened in early 2024. Designed by Perth based architect firm, Carabiner, who focus their design on the purpose of empowering people who visit, work and live in the spaces they create. The Carabiner team were searching for a carpet product that visually displayed varied lightness and darkness whilst appearing like a seamless on the floor. Our Optic Reset collection  met the specific brief required and provided the varied depth of colour whilst being subtle in nature.

The Capitol Hotel Sydney features our woven carpets throughout each level creating a distinct yet cohesive design across each floor. Utilising the timeless houndstooth pattern throughout all designs brings a balanced approach to the overall sense of each space. With splashes of colour brought into each floor through grounding solid circles and blocked abstract elements.

In the heart of Melbourne, a new community space has emerged as part of the Victorian State Government Living Libraries Infrastructure Program—the Narrm Ngarrgu Library.

The recently constructed Novotel is a premium 4-star hotel situated in the heart of Devonport Tasmania and features 187 guest rooms with stunning city, park, and water views. The hotel boasts a cutting-edge design crafted by the renowned Singapore-based design studio, Kreate. Our in-house design team were able to bring Kreate’s deign brief to life using our Designer Jet® custom carpet technology to provide a unique flooring solution that perfectly complements the various finishes in each space. 

Novotel Devonport

Collaborating closely with Wilson & Hill Architects, GH Commercial embarked on a quest to select flooring that would not only meet the rigorous demands of a healthcare facility but also contribute to a positive atmosphere, promoting well-being among patients. The choice fell upon Mohawk's Art Style collection, specifically the Disruptive Path carpet planks. Designed to infuse common areas with a blend of tranquility and vibrant energy, these flooring elements represent Mohawk's belief in the transformative power of design.

Waitaha Canterbury Cancer Centre 

Over the last six years, Geelong Art Centre has undergone a multi-staged large-scale redevelopment, now making it the largest dedicated regional arts centre in Australia. Each of the building’s four levels evokes a different Wadawurrung narrative, with Ochre Country expressed at ground level, ascending to Moonah Forest Country, Sky Country and Night Sky Country. We are proud to have been a part of this participatory design process where our design and technical teams have worked with the Geelong Arts Centre project teams to deliver a range of custom Designer Jet® carpets that speaks to the traditional stories.

TWOA Centre - Auckland

This brand-new venue boasts large sports viewing screens, a mega bar and four event spaces, perfect for family and friends to come together to enjoy an American sports culture environment. This new Varsity location required a flooring finish that complemented the American sports themed interiors and menu. Our Artisan woven carpet in colour 34 Tartan Bells provided the perfect match that coincided with the brand colours of Varsity. The Kingsway Bar & Bistro were looking to refresh the interiors of their family owned and operated venue. Our Owls collection from our Mohawk Group brand was selected due to its unique appearance and lighter colour palette which assisted in lightening the dining spaces within the venue.

Designing the interior of The Meat & Wine Co.’s latest venue in Sydney’s CBD, the COOOP design team required a bespoke carpet design that embodied the traditional cultural design elements within the venue. Utilising our Designer Jet® technology, a gold and charcoal abstract carpet was created to perfectly match the wallpaper that is applied to the roof to create a mirrored effect that is the centre piece of the design.

Designed by award winning architects Cottee Parker, the overall contemporary design features a wide range of mixed prints that are reflected in the carpet. Each space is perfectly styled to match the carpet, with a unique design incorporated to meet the specific elements of each area.

Five years in the making, the Pullman Sydney Penrith has opened its doors, offering prestige luxury to its guests. A range of custom bespoke carpets provide opulent flooring that reflected the cultural inspiration of the project. Broadloom and carpet tile products were selected to meet the specific purpose and design element of each unique space.
